In the world of pet fish, you can have freshwater ones or saltwater ones. In terms of those originally from tropical environments, we refer to freshwater fish as tropical fish and saltwater ones as marine fish. By tropical, we mean the zone of the earth between the tropic of Cancer in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn in the south. That is 23.4oN to 23.4oS.

Freshwater fish are grouped into several families, perhaps the most well known being cichlids (e.g. Lemon cichlid - Neolamprologus lepeuli), cyprinid (e.g. Clown barbs - Puntius everetti and zebras - Danio rerio), characins (e.g. Neon tetra - Paracheirodon innesi) and live bearers (e.g. Guppy - Poecilia reticulata).

A couple of examples of marine fish are the Butterflyfish (e.g. Chaetodon falcula) and the Clownfish (e.g. Amphiprion ocellaris) - like the star of the the film, Finding Nemo.
