A brief definition of pet tropical fish.
Written by admin on 11 January, 2009 – 10:28 pm -In the world of pet fish, you can have freshwater ones or saltwater ones. In terms of those originally from tropical environments, we refer to freshwater fish as tropical fish and saltwater ones as marine fish. By tropical, we mean the zone of the earth between the tropic of Cancer in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn in the south. That is 23.4oN to 23.4oS. Freshwater fish are grouped into several families, perhaps the most well known being cichlids (e.g. Lemon cichlid - Neolamprologus lepeuli), cyprinid (e.g. Clown barbs - Puntius everetti and zebras - Danio rerio), characins (e.g. Neon tetra - Paracheirodon innesi) and live bearers (e.g. Guppy - Poecilia reticulata). How many pet tropical fish can live happily in my fish tank?
Written by admin on 11 January, 2009 – 9:44 pm -This is a very good question. On the face of it, why not just pile 'em in there? Well, of course this isn't going to be conducive to their having a happy and fulfilling life. So how do you decide how many pet tropical fish can live healthily together in one fish tank? There are a couple of rules of thumb that you can use to decide. The first is based upon the volume of water in your tank, and the second is based upon the tanks surface area. First things first, you need to limit the amount of pet tropical fish to 100mm by length for every 18 litres of water in your fish tank (roughly 4 inches of fish per 4 gallons - 1" per gallon). Of course you must take into account the fact that for a given length of fish, some species are going to... more
