How many pet tropical fish can live happily in my fish tank?

This is a very good question. On the face of it, why not just pile 'em in there? Well, of course this isn't going to be conducive to their having a happy and fulfilling life. So how do you decide how many pet tropical fish can live healthily together in one fish tank? There are a couple of rules of thumb that you can use to decide.  The first is based upon the volume of water in your tank, and the second is based upon the tanks surface area.
